Who says you can’t have four kids in the city? Duh, its all about bunk beds, you know the double deckers???

Funny, before I had kids, whenever someone said bunkbeds, I would think nostalgically of boarding school in Kenya, including midnight feasts, night time chats, confessions and sordid gossip, perpetually gorgeous weather, the scenic landscape PLUS you have these camping trips which are essentially safaris. At my school, our hostel was set up in bandas (google it), with the colorful and extremely large ‘geccos’ that would occassionally come and visit. And we actually wore ‘safari boots’, and slept in bunk beds when we were 12 and 13 before we were
upgraded to twin beds at 13/14.

What’s great about bunkbeds, is that you can build drawers underneath the bottom bunk. The only thing I don’t like about bunk beds is the controversy  about whether the top bunk is better than the bottom and vice versa. I have done both sides….and really, for those kids who share, the bottom bed is great if you are one of those perpetual nighttime bathroom goers, however, whoever comes over to visit ALWAYS has to sit on your well-made bed (even if its only for a split-second). The top bunk is more private, you get a panaramic view of everything, BUT beware of the sleepwalker…

Now that i am soo much older and maybe just a wee-bit wiser, I can see the value in having bunk beds in city apartments. Space. But actually, I would say that around age 4 and 5, many kids are dying to have that ‘bunk bed’ experience.  Even if it means having a bunk bed in a room that you don’t share. So, its probably a good thing all around. You get to read your books with little torches,  spy gear  during playdates, and aren’t slumber parties and sleepovers the best??? And then there’s that bonding with your sibling every night after lights out…….

Child x. “what do you think of xxxx?

Sibling”I don’t, why….”.

Child x.”Well apparently, xxx got caught doing  blah blah…

Sibling (older no doubt): silence as he/she pretends not to hear….and tries to sleep.

This can be both a fun but also aggravating experience until you get your own room….but the bonds, the conversations and the sibling gossip just gets better the older you get….

Decoholic Interior Design (www.decoholic.org) designs these incredible bunk beds for four kids or more. What I like is how they create privacy for each bunk through curtains/walls…i love the little windows in the third bunk bed attached below. Note, many interior designers like Nastasi Vail can also custom design bunk beds to fit your room’s specifications….(see my previous post on designing children’s rooms).

And then of course there is the bus bunkbed and the convertible sofa/bunk bed, couldn’t resist adding these for something different, what do you think??

Thanks, I LOVE it! I used to do research for a living, I just find myself doing it when everyone is asleep. Bizarre, right? I wish i had started 10 years ago!

    All comments positive, several
were inspired for their own rooms.
Someone was worried about the difficulty
of making the bed as a parent of kids under 7.
No one talked about safety as a concern for the
playbeds, that’s definitely an issue if for younger siblings.
Many 18-month old climbers are adept at getting up but the
nightmare is getting down. As a parent that was in a similar situation
I felt like we needed to either police or keep the bedroom door
closed firmly. Our 2-year learned to get down safely but I am certainly alert
when when his chums come to visit!!!

Thanks, that’s really nice of you! You can subscribe via email or rss feeds. I think the rss feeds are the best, because your inbox doesn’t get clogged up with different posts. If you have any trouble, please email me at milbertbentham@gmail.com. I can figure out how to add you!!!
